At the entrance to the island, facing the mainland and the Mo\u00ebze-Ol\u00e9ron nature reserve, take advantage of camping at Ch\u00e2teau d’Ol\u00e9ron<\/a> to visit an important oyster-farming port<\/strong> in the Marennes basin. Fortified by Vauban during the Wars of Religion, Ch\u00e2teau d’Ol\u00e9ron became the residence of the governors of Ol\u00e9ron under Richelieu. It was during this period that its Vauban citadel<\/strong> was built, on the site of the Ch\u00e2teau des Ducs d’Aquitaine.Oyster farming<\/strong>, already practiced in the 17\u1d49 century, really took off in the basin during the 19\u1d49 century, with the start of “claire” refining. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ch\u00e2teau-d’Ol\u00e9ron citadel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The citadel on the island of Oleron<\/a> is a sight not to be missed. Its star-shaped structure<\/strong> can be seen from the sky as you fly over the island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The citadel was built in 1630 by Richelieu, then enlarged and fortified by Vauban until 1700 as part of a series of fortifications along the Charente coast designed to protect the Rochefort arsenal. In the 20\u1d49 century, it served as a prison until the Second World War. Bombarded by enemy armies, it remained abandoned for a long time before being restored and opened to visitors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The site is open to the public and offers beautiful views<\/strong> of the Charente channel, the oyster port and the island bridge. Temporary exhibitions<\/strong> are held in the arsenal and powder magazine. A visit to the citadel<\/strong> is part of a pleasant discovery tour<\/strong> offered by the tourist office through Ch\u00e2teau-d’Ol\u00e9ron, from the narrow streets of the historic center<\/strong> to the fortifications and the oyster and yachting harbour<\/strong>. Guided tours are also available during the school vacations, as well as nocturnes with dramatized historical visits<\/strong> in July and August. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A stroll along the harbour<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An important oyster transit site<\/strong> since the 17\u1d49 century, Ch\u00e2teau-d’Ol\u00e9ron, a seaside resort in the Charente-Maritime department of Poitou-Charentes, is today one of the key oyster ports<\/strong> in the Marennes-Ol\u00e9ron basin.Former salt marshes<\/strong> were transformed in the 19\u1d49 century into maturing basins for oysters from claires, which owe their particular taste and unique hue to the blue navicule, a microscopic algae<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ch\u00e2teau-d’Ol\u00e9ron’s oyster farmers<\/strong> can be found in the port and on the Ors channel, just inside the citadel. The longest oyster-farming channel on the island at 1,500 meters, it is lined with colorful oyster huts<\/strong> that form a picturesque backdrop. Many are home to the studios of artists and craftsmen<\/strong> in a variety of artistic and artisanal trades<\/strong>: cutlery, painting and sculpture, metalwork, ceramics and woodworking. A veritable artists’ village that opens its doors to the public along the water’s edge. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
